A statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass was vandalized in Rochester, New York on Sunday in what is a suspected act of retaliation against a recent string of vandalism targeting Confederate statues.
The statue, which was located in Maplewood Park -- a site along the Underground Railroad where Douglass and Harriet Tubman helped lead slaves to freedom -- was knocked off its pedestal. There was also damage to the base and a finger on the statue. The vandals also targeted the statue on the anniversary of Douglass' 1852 anti-slavery speech at the location. The statue is being repaired and will eventually be returned to the park. (WROC-TV)
