Same Track as Irma? Maria Becomes Major Category 3 Hurricane

Maria 11AM 9/18/17

A hurricane watch is up for Puerto Rico as Hurricane Maria left residents of the Irma-smashed Caribbean islands racing to prepare for another powerful storm.

The storm is projected to take aim at Puerto Rico's southern coast. Forecasters say Maria could be "catastrophic" for Puerto Rico, which was largely spared by Hurricane Irma.

The storm is now a major hurricane,  packing 120 mile-an-hour winds.  It could be at category 4 strength as it approaches Puerto Rico.

The storm could then turn northwest toward Florida which is just beginning to recover from Hurricane Irma.
